The field notebook / Sun Diary

Follow the light you actually have.

Keep a simple record of direct sunlight at one position. Compare observations without guessing your balcony’s conditions.

Your working space

Record separate intervals if shade interrupts the sun. Overlapping intervals at the same position on the same day are merged in the total.

Field notes

One position, one observed day

Sunlight at the door can differ from sunlight at a low shelf. Give each position a consistent label and record only the intervals you observed. The total merges overlapping intervals for that position and date, so accidentally repeating an interval does not double-count the hours.

A diary is not a forecast

A cloudy day, nearby building and the season all affect your observations. The diary does not infer annual light conditions from one day or recommend a plant automatically. Repeat observations at different times of year and compare them with the requirements of a plant you are considering.

Take the record with you

Optional browser storage keeps this diary on this device. Export a text copy for your own records or print the table. No precise location is requested. A date with no record is unknown, not a day with zero sunlight.
